It started with a survey.
So… I wasn’t always very good at taking feedback. Our recurring employee survey helped me change that. Shift happens, am I right?
We run an annual anonymous survey so feedback can be candid. During our first round in 2020, our leadership team thought we were doing pretty dang good. But when we saw the results? Oof, our egos got a little bruised.
And, with time, we learned to be better, lead better, listen more and dig in. And now, we’re the best we’ve ever been.

Ouch. This one hurt.
Reality checks are always hard, and frankly, the feedback on our first survey was personal. Feedback we'd never gotten face-to-face was surfacing, managers were getting called out. There were tears.
And then, as leaders we coached each other through it and growth happened. I began to separate who I was from some of the problems I was contributing to. We focused on solving the problem, and NOT retaliating.
We asked the team for feedback, and they delivered.
And heck, it was still better than the DMV's satisfaction rating!

We hit our goal! Progress > perfection.
There was still tough feedback here, but it had softened. The team saw the changes we made after the first survey, and trust and credibility blossomed.
It was also during this survey that we realized the 2020 survey we had was also filled with tons of positives, and so was this one. Lesson learned: don't ruminate on the negative and forget there is probably 10x more positive.

Proud doesn't cover it.
To say having detractors on our team bugged us would be an understatement. We were always wondering how we could win them over.
I think with time, some of them went on to find roles that fit them better, and others stayed as we got better.
Leaders saw a marked uptick in praise in this survey and the comments were mainly focused on business issues. To me this meant managers were leading with more humanity than ever, and that is something I'm the most proud of.

I have tears - happy ones after 4 years of doing this surveying - of joy because the growth is REAL.
Talking the talk is one thing, and walking it out is a different thing. Change is hard, not changing makes things harder.
The team is happy, healthy and full of creative ideas for our business, and that's what came out of this survey.
Looking forward to the next survey - something I would not have said 4 years ago! :)
